People get a special glance in the eyes when they see ballet’s pointe shoe dance or even are reminded of it. For a good reason! Children, teens, adults, older people – they all love it because graceful toe-dance (how it is also called) emits an essence of human art that only ballet has to offer. Ballet master Andrey Klemm from Paris Opera also teaches the girls, and he had the idea to make a DVD with a special class for toe-dance. He asked the Étoile Isabelle Ciaravola if she would join, and she said spontaneously yes, enthusiastically. The present DVD Sur les Pointes avec une Étoile“ („On pointe with a star“) is a classic among the training videos.

The friendly welcome is quickly followed by work on the body. Andrey Klemm, who is the only ballet master at the Paris Opéra who has not been educated on location in Paris and worked there as a ballerino, has a trained body that obeys him, he has a lot of willpower and so much know-how that he can exemplarily demonstrate the exercises. It is also his specialty to see what the dancers need – a great virtue in his profession.

His gestures, his voice and his look have this magic that inspires and stimulates the dancers – voilà!

At first, we see a gentle mixture from set up and roll down the toes, again and again, in different positions. Then, speed and difficulty are slowly, but steadily increased, with a classical class – up to pirouettes and big jumps.

Isabelle Ciaravola lächelt und wartet auf Anweisungen. – Isabelle Ciaravola smiles and waits for new instructions. Videostill / DVD: Gisela Sonnenburg

Isabelle Ciaravola smiles charmingly into the camera. She stands here as an example for all ballerinas who attach great importance to their feet and appreciate to get trained competently and with empathy.

She was born in Corsica and studied in Paris, first at the Conservatory and then at the Opéra Ballet School. She danced as Étoile in Paris until 2014, when she retired after her farewell performance gave her half an hour of standing ovations. Today she teaches at the Conservatory and passes on her knowledge about the dancing body in professional ballet.

Her lyrical spirit, but also her high degree of elegance characterize her dance also on this DVD.

Isabelle Ciaravola knows Andrey Klemm for years from work. He was trained at the Bolshoi School in Moscow. Instead of dancing with Bolshoi he started his career as a solo dancer with Moscow Classical Ballet Company. And: He studied ballet teaching at famous GITIS (The State Institute of Performance Art). In 1994, he came to Germany and danced with Valery Panov in Bonn Opera Ballet Company and started two years later giving master classes in summerly workshops. Since 1997, he danced with Berlin State Opera Ballet Company, and in Berlin he met his later wife, the soloist and ballerina Maria-Helena Buckley who is a gifted photographer today. After gaining experience as a teacher for students as well as for professionals, in 2007 Andrey Klemm began teaching the ballet company of the Opéra in Paris. But his presence on stage is not lost at all: In „The Lady of the Camellias“, one of the most danced ballets by great John Neumeier, Klemm plays with strong expression the role of Monsieur Duval, father of the male lover Armand.

„There is no certain age to begin the toe-dance. But one should not be too young“, Klemm says in an interview that is part of the DVD. And he justifies his correct opinion: „Because first a certain musculature at feet and legs must be trained, in order to create this foot work.“

Otherwise it could be dangerous – but in general pointe shoe dance trains and strengthens the feet and legs, so it really increases the freedom of the body.

But there’s something else that matters.

Klemm: „It’s not just a technique, it’s also about conveying a certain feeling.“

He cites John Neumeier’s „Lady of the Camellias“ as an example, who was also embodied by Isabelle Ciaravola in the title role: „There is no pantomime, but the dancing feet speak in it, you can really understand what they say when they move quickly.“

Even primaballerinas have to train a lot… here: to use the power of the fourth position. Videostill / DVD: Gisela Sonnenburg

The development of toe-dance began in Paris when Marie Taglioni, daughter of the ballet master and choreographer Filippo Taglioni, first gave in „La Sylphide“ (1832) the impression that a ballerina could float gently over the stage floor when she was dancing.

Taglioni wore shoes that she had developed together with her father: the sole was reinforced with several layers of cardboard. She couldn’t stand on it for long, but the start of  toe-dance had been made.

Andrey Klemm points out that in ballet history quite often male ballet experts taught and developed toe-shoe dance: for example Enrico Cecchetti and Christian Johansson. And even  Marius Petipa advanced the graceful pointe shoe dance together with his choreographies.

In „Sur les Pointes avec une Étoile“, however, there is no historical lesson, but a very topical, contemporary training. The master teaches by giving class – and the primaballerina practices and perfects her art by doing it.

The piano is played by Sylvain Durand, and the sound is as natural as it sounds in the studio with the famous outlook onto the roofs in Paris.

Whether you feel like taking immediately part or whether you are content with looking at it, is up to you to decide. Even if you are male! Because in general, there are also possibilities that boys practice the toe-dance, to strengthen the muscles and possibly to be prepared for funny and poetic travestie appearances in modern ballets. The evil stepsister in „Cinderella“, once brilliantly portrayed as drunken by Vladimir Malakhov, for example likes to stagger in size 44 in toe-shoes, and John Neumeier’s „Midsummer Night’s Dream“ also has unforgettably delicious performances sur les pointesfor the part of Thisbe.

But that’s another topic, the use of pointe shoes on stage. This DVD is about the poetry of work in the ballet studio – and Isabelle Ciaravola and Andrey Klemm know so much to show and convey that we are warmly grateful for it. What a joy to listen to them!
