The first plié is like a declaration of love. Soul tells body that it loves, it cannot be without, it wishes to stay together until eternity. So body replies. It also cannot imagine to breathe without soul, to balance, to act, to live.
Daily ballet class evokes conflation of inside and outside. We say class because we are all students forever in ballet. It maintains self expression with highest body control. It repairs inner harms to avoid exterior damages. It animates muscles to hold the soul.
Die Liebe zum Körper bewirkt seine Gegenliebe.
Love to the body awakes its love, too.
Even if it is hard work again and again, so it is also: happiness.
The Battement tendu („Tendu“) is like the first date. You stay on the ground, but you develop dreams of flying high.
The Petit battement jeté („Jeté“) follows this idea and elevates the free leg to the nobility. It ploughs through the air.
Das Battement frappé („Frappé“) bringt Schlagkraft ins Spiel. „Frappé“ heißt im Französischen ja auch „geschlagen“.
The Battement frappé („Frappé) brings the power of impact into the play. „Frappé“ in French even means „striked“.
The Rond de jambe par terre calms down and keeps the target certainty.
The Battement fondu („Fondu“) awakes consideration.
The Battement développé („Développé“) brightens the senses.
The Grand battement jeté („Grand battement“) strengthens the way.
Au milieu – without the barre, the bar – it goes on.
But the heart stays with all the exercises out of the first half or three quarters hour, no matter what happens. Without them ballet life would be senseless.
Beauty, harmony, balance, energy: These four things are set by ballet against the horror of the world. A kind of power starting with self control.
Grace, musicality, joy of the own body, self expression – so the personality grows in ballet just like with persistence and bravery.
And every class ends with a Référence, the artistic bow, accompanied by an especially beautiful Port de bras.
Bis zum nächsten Tag…
Until the next day…
